Tom Steyer

Steyer has a thin record when it comes to public education.

2019

Tom Steyer has largely self-funded his campaign. Among donors we found none with an anti-public school record.

He supports banning “for profit” charters. Politico rates him as undecided. We found no philanthropic support for charter schools. He told the Washington Post “Charter schools should be required to meet the same performance standards as traditional public schools. I believe that we should stop funding for all new for-profit charters, and responsibly phase them out.”

Steyer is opposed to vouchers.

We could not find a record of a stated position regarding testing.

Although we found no connections with advocates of privatization or corporate school reform, his foundation gave $100,000 to Teach for America.
