NPE Action proudly endorses Abigail Spanberger for Governor of Virginia. She is a proud public school parent and the mother of three daughters in Virginia public schools. As Governor, Abigail will always listen to the voices of parents, educators, and administrators — not use them as political pawns. She will fight to ensure that every public school in Virginia has the resources it needs for every student to thrive, working with the General Assembly to close longstanding funding gaps and protect education dollars from being diverted to voucher programs. Her administration will champion academic excellence by strengthening literacy and math instruction, modernizing assessments to measure true student growth, and expanding access to advanced coursework and career-ready programs that prepare students for success in the 21st century.
Abigail is committed to addressing Virginia’s teacher shortage by recruiting, retaining, and supporting high-quality educators. She will increase funding for residency and apprenticeship programs, expand recruitment to include veterans and teaching assistants, and ensure teachers receive competitive pay, professional development, and adequate planning time. She will also work to repair and modernize aging school facilities so that every child learns in a safe, modern environment conducive to success.
Under Abigail’s leadership, Virginia will prioritize student safety, mental health, and equity. She will strengthen safe storage laws to prevent gun violence, improve threat assessment protocols, and expand wraparound services — including telehealth programs for mental health, free school meals, and community school models. Her administration will ensure students with disabilities and English language learners receive the targeted support they need, and she will direct the Virginia Department of Education to operate efficiently and transparently, always guided by the mission of helping every child reach their full potential.
