NPE Action Endorses Teacher John Hurley for the Indiana House of Representatives

Educator John Hurley has secured NPE Action’s endorsement for the District 75 seat in the Indiana House of Representatives. Teaching is John’s passion, and he believes that schools are the heart of a community. Certified in five content areas, he has been teaching for eight years in the same district where his mother taught for 42 years.

John told us that he wants to be an advocate for public schools in the legislature. He believes that Indiana needs more lawmakers who can “offer solutions from the front lines” and “create a culture of respect for educators at the Statehouse.”

He’s prepared to take on issues related to testing, charter schools, vouchers and class size. Thanks to his years in the classroom, John knows that tests should never be used to evaluate an educator because they can’t measure the impact a teacher has on a student.

When asked about privatization, John told us that charter schools should not receive taxpayer funding, and that the number of charter schools in Indiana should be capped. He believes that Indiana’s voucher program drains money from public schools and should be eliminated. And finally, John said he would support legislation to cap class sizes at 25 or fewer.

NPE Action urges voters in Indiana’s District 75 who care about public education to do whatever they can to support John’s campaign.
