NPE Action endorses Sue Woltanski for Monroe County School Board, District 5

The Network for Public Education Action is proud to endorse Sue Woltanski for Monroe County School Board, District 5. As the incumbent, Sue has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to ensuring every child in Monroe County has access to safe, high-quality public schools — and she is prepared to continue that work.
Sue is among Florida’s most effective advocates for public education, with more than a decade of experience working at the local level, in Tallahassee, and in Washington, D.C. Her record reflects a deep understanding of the challenges facing public schools and a practical vision for addressing them.
Sue will work to reduce standardized testing and eliminate weighted GPAs, recognizing that test scores reflect family income far more than student achievement. She understands that tying teacher evaluations to test performance has narrowed curricula and led to widespread “teaching to the test” — at the expense of genuine learning.
She is committed to increasing funding for students with disabilities and students from marginalized populations, and to restoring literacy instruction that asks students to engage with complete books — building the habits and love of reading that excerpts and test passages cannot.
Sue will continue to protect Monroe County schools from budget erosion, navigating the fiscal pressures of continued state defunding and declining enrollment in a manner that keeps students — not spreadsheets — at the center of every decision.
HER POSITIONS, IN HER OWN WORDS:
ON VOUCHERS
“The marketization of public education is a very bad idea. Public dollars should go to public schools that abide by state standards, are accredited, require certified teachers and are held to standards of transparency and accountability.”
ON CHARTER SCHOOLS
” I believe charters have not lived up to their promises. They are no cheaper. They don’t get better outcomes. In Florida, they have become taken over by corporations that have made hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars.”
NPE Action urges Florida public education supporters to vote for Sue Woltanski on August 18, 2026. Make a plan to vote — and help get out the word in Monroe County.
