NPE Action Endorses Phil Weiser for the Democratic Primary Candidate for Governor

With Colorado’s Democratic gubernatorial primary just two weeks away — on June 30 — NPE Action is proud to endorse Phil Weiser for the Democratic primary candidate for governor.

Public education in Colorado is at a crossroads. The Trump administration’s push to divert public school funding to private and religious institutions through federal voucher schemes represents one of the most serious threats to our schools in a generation. Colorado needs a governor who will stand firm — not equivocate. Phil Weiser is opposed.

He has been unequivocal. In his own words, he will “never support privatizing our schools or allowing profit-motives to undermine our kids’ education” and will support “no bill from the legislature that does so.” He came out early and forcefully against Trump’s federal voucher program, and he has a detailed blueprint for supporting Colorado students, educators, and schools.

Weiser also opposed Amendment 80, which would have opened the door to vouchers.  He is a strong supporter of increased funding for public schools.  He believes that teacher salaries must be increased.

We also want to be direct about the choice voters face. Senator Bennet has a long record of support for the charter school industry, and his tenure as Denver Public Schools superintendent — a position he accepted without prior experience as a school administrator — left a legacy of tension with educators that many still recall today. His response to the Trump voucher threat has been notably more cautious than Weiser’s.

Retired CU Boulder professor and public school advocate Kevin Welner puts it plainly: “Phil Weiser is among the most intelligent and hard-working public servants in America today. He is also a genuine progressive and strong supporter of public education. I wholeheartedly endorse him.”

We agree. Phil Weiser is the candidate public education supporters in Colorado should vote for on June 30.
