NPE Action endorses Maurice (Mo) Green for NC Superintendent of Public Instruction.
NPE Action is proud to endorse Maurice (Mo) Green for NC Superintendent of Public Instruction. Mo has extensive experience in the field of education. He was Superintendent of Guilford County Schools, the third largest district in the state, for more than seven years. Mo was also Deputy Superintendent/Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, one of the largest two districts in the state., Mo has spent his life as an advocate for the parents and children of North Carolina.
Mo’s campaign message is one that understands that the very soul of public education is on the ballot with the election of the next N.C. Superintendent of Public Instruction. He understands that public education is being dismantled, it is woefully underfunded, its educators are belittled, and student academic performance needs improvement. Mo will be committed to a wide variety of stakeholders, including the General Assembly, the State Board of Education, local boards of education, educators, the Governor, parents, the faith community, and businesses. Mo’s vision is for North Carolina to be recognized as an excellent school system that is the best in the country.
Mo’s top three priorities for public education in North Carolina are rooted in what is best for children. Mo plans to advocate for North Carolina to fully invest in its public education system. He will also advocate for substantial increases in the base pay for all public school educators. Mo will also deploy targeted resources and strategies to support lower-performing schools and school systems, while implementing policies and strategies that will improve the academic achievement of all students. Mo promises to always continue to listen and learn about the needs of local schools and districts and the NC Department of Public Instruction. He understands that his priorities may change based on the needs of children and families.
Finally, Mo shared his views on standardized testing and class size with NPE Action. Mo believes that standardized testing should primarily be used to help educators and students assess how well students have learned the material being assessed so that they can work on areas of opportunity and celebrate areas of mastery. He believes that class size matters immensely. He stated the limitations of the size of classes will vary based on a number of factors, including the grade level, student demographics, and student academic performance. Mo would support legislation and policy changes that reduce class sizes in most situations.
Mo plans to work hard for every North Carolina family, student, and teacher. North Carolina public schools need a champion who will provide a new vision, and Mo is that champion. NPE Action urges public education supporters in North Carolina to get out the vote for Mo Green in the general election on November 5th.
