NPE Action is proud to endorse Mahdi Bey for Pittsburgh Public Schools School Board, District 7.  Mahdi is a proud public school parent. His son attends Brashear and inspires him to fight for all young people to have access to the opportunities they need to succeed. Mahdi lives in Carrick and works in the office of State Representative Jessica Benham. He looks forward to using his years of government experience to fight for students who live in PPS District 7.

Mahdi is running for the school board because he feels it’s a pivotal time in education. He believes we need leaders who won’t be afraid to stand up and speak up. Mahdi is running for the school board to fight for all students to have the resources they deserve and to protect tax dollars. He told NPE Action that he is running to continue to affect change and be a voice for his community.

Mahdi’s positions on charters, vouchers, and testing align with those of NPE Action.

Here’s what Mahdi told us.

Charters: “Instead of creating one good public school district, charter schools have created even more silos for education that will ultimately leave vulnerable students, especially students of color and kids with disabilities, behind academically, socially and emotionally. Everyone has a choice of how they want to educate their children, but we must ensure that PPS can meet the needs of all of its students. We should focus on targeted and intentional improvements for equitable education, not approving more and more charter schools.”

Vouchers:  When asked if he supports vouchers, Mahdi told us,  “No. Cut and dry.”

Testing: “Testing should be used as a metric, but not the only metric in evaluating our children. Every child learns differently. We know this. Why do we spend so much time on standardized testing if we know our children retain knowledge differently?”

NPE Action urges members of the Pittsburgh Public School District 7 community to get out the vote for Mahdi Bey in the primary election on May 20th.
