NPE Action Endorses Kristin Root for Indiana State Senate, District 21.

Kristin has been a strong supporter of Indiana public schools. She worked as a therapist with middle school students and supported children and families through DCS, in partnership with schools. She has supported public education by advocating for stronger school funding, higher teacher pay, fully funded special education, universal school meals, expanding mental health services, and investment in counselors, social workers, and support staff. She has opposed policies that divert public dollars to private-school vouchers and for-profit charter schools.
Kristin’s top priority is stability for working families. She feels strongly that this should include lowering everyday costs, expanding access to affordable healthcare and childcare, protecting public education, strengthening workers’ rights, and ensuring people can earn enough to support their families. Her education priorities begin with fully funded public schools and ensuring every student has access to a strong school district. She supports raising teacher pay and fully funding special education. To ensure the above is implemented Kristin wants to have more conversations with teachers and administrators to ensure these policies align with their priorities.
Finally, Kristin believes that public schools in her district and across Indiana are facing inadequate and unpredictable funding, teacher and support-staff shortages, growing class sizes, and increasing student mental health needs. She told NPE Action that recent property-tax changes are placing additional pressure on local school budgets, while Indiana continues expanding private-school vouchers. At the same time, Indiana ranks poorly in teacher pay compared with other states, making it harder to recruit and retain experienced educators. She is concerned about school safety, aging facilities, transportation costs, and unequal access to technology and advanced courses, particularly in rural and lower-income communities.
HER POSITIONS, IN HER OWN WORDS:
ON VOUCHERS
“This system is wrought with exploitation and abuse so I would not support any legislation that is in favor of vouchers/school choice programs.”
ON CHARTER SCHOOLS
“I oppose expansion of charter schools, especially for-profit charter schools that use public education dollars without transparency, accountability, and obligations as traditional public schools. Indiana needs to prioritize fully funding public schools. I have not advocated for charter schools and never will.”
NPE Action urges Indiana public education supporters to vote for Kristin Root on November 3, 2026. Make a plan to vote — and help get out the word in Indiana State Senate District 21.
