NPE Action endorses Josh Lowry for Indiana House of Representatives, District 24

The Network for Public Education Action is proud to endorse Josh Lowry for the Indiana House of Representatives, District 24. Josh feels strongly about the power and value of public education. As a foster parent, he has seen, first hand, how an educator’s connection with a child can bring stability to a kid’s life and improve more than just grades. Due to their experience as foster parents, Josh and his wife have strongly advocated for their local public school district. Josh is a member of the Westfield Lions Club, and as part of that role, he administers vision tests to every third-grade student in the district. Josh is also a regular at district informational meetings so that he can stay informed about what is happening in education in his district.

Josh has a strong campaign message that elevates the voice of all Indiana citizens. He believes that Hoosiers deserve to have their voices heard and if everyone stands together, they can force the General Assembly to listen again and create policies that are representative of the wants and needs of Hoosiers. Josh’s priorities are rooted in both children and their families. He believes that the General Assembly needs to fund education adequately and that public schools need to be empowered. He feels strongly that educators should make education decisions. Josh will meet with educators to get their input on testing and help move education in the direction that they think is best.

NPE Action asked Josh where he stands on charters, vouchers, and mayoral control.  Here is what Josh shared with us:

Charters: “While I hold no ill will toward charter schools, I believe that a school district, not private investors, should be trusted to educate children. Rather than taking public money to educate a select few students, school districts should study how a charter school is serving its intended population, implement those practices with the entire public school district, and re-route those public dollars back to the schools that serve all kids.”

Vouchers: “Public funds should go to public schools. The state spent $439 million on vouchers this past year. With 351 school districts in Indiana, vouchers took, on average, $1.25 million from each school district in the state. That kind of funding can go a long way toward educating the more than 90% of Hoosier children who attend public schools.”

Mayoral Control: “School boards should be democratically elected. In an era where school boards are becoming increasingly politicized and partisan, giving one person, even the mayor, total control over who makes decisions for an entire school district, is problematic. The school district is supposed to reflect and represent its community.”

Josh Lowry will be a champion for all children in the Indiana House of Representatives, District 24. NPE Action urges District 24 citizens to get out the vote in the General Election for Josh Lowry on November 5, 2024.
