NPE Action endorses Gina Hinojosa for Governor of Texas.

The Network for Public Education Action is proud to unconditionally and enthusiastically endorse Gina Hinojosa for Governor of Texas. She has been a tireless fighter of the efforts of the present Governor, now her opponent, to defund and dismantle public schools.

When her son’s elementary school was threatened with closure due to state budget cuts, Gina organized, rallied fellow parents, and ran for the Austin ISD School Board. She won, and she kept her son’s school and all district schools open, becoming Board President in 2015. From the very beginning, Gina has shown us what it means to put students and families first.

But across Texas, neighborhood schools kept closing as the legislature continued to rob public tax dollars from public classrooms. So, Gina ran for the Texas House of Representatives, and she won again. In Austin, she has been one of the most effective and tireless advocates for public education the state has ever had.

In 2019, she fought for and helped deliver more than $11 billion in new investment for Texas public schools — one of the largest infusions of education funding in state history.

Gina brings to this work a background unlike that of most legislators. Before the Capitol, she was a civil rights and union-side labor lawyer — representing working Texans who had been cheated out of wages, denied benefits, or treated unfairly on the job. That experience gives her a deep and personal understanding of what educators face every day, and why their working conditions are, at their core, students’ learning conditions. She has been a consistent partner to Education Austin and to public school communities across the state.

As a major leader in the fight against privatization, Gina has stood firm against every scheme to drain resources from public schools — from voucher proposals to charter expansion — refusing to let public dollars flow away from the public system.

Last year, Gina was a keynote speaker at our conference. You can watch her address here.

We are proud to endorse Gina Hinojosa — a proven champion for students, educators, and the public schools that are the foundation of our communities and our democracy.
