Dr. Eliz Markowitz for Texas House District 28

The Network for Public Education Action is pleased to announce its strong support for Dr. Elizabeth (Eliz) Markowitz in her campaign to be the Texas State Representative for House District 28.

Dr. Markowitz received her doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction – Learning, Design, and Technology and has been an educator at various public Texas institutions for the past 15 years. She has authored and co-authored a number of books focused on various academic subjects, and has worked with future school teachers to prepare them for the classroom.

In her responses to our questionnaire she demonstrated that she is not afraid to take a firm stance against the privatization of Texas’ public school system.

The state should not support “school choice” schemes that use public school funds to support either private or sectarian schools. Indeed, public tax money should only be used to support a system of free public schools. Furthermore, we should oppose the implementation of any school voucher or tax credit program that would financially and academically harm the Texas public school system.

Her position on standardized testing is also aligned with NPE Action’s priorities. She told us that standardized testing is “an ineffective metric of both student and teacher performance, discourages higher-level critical thinking and creativity, and penalizes underserved populations.”

Dr. Markowitz’s other priorities include curriculum reform and improving the way the state attracts, trains, and retains educators. She also believes in community governance of schools and small class sizes.

For all of the above and more, we give our strong support to Dr. Eliz Markowitz. Please be sure to cast your vote for her in November.
