NPE Action endorses Carlos Thomas for Pittsburgh Public Schools School Board, District 1.

NPE Action is proud to endorse Carlos Thomas for Pittsburgh Public Schools School Board, District 1. Carlos is a lifelong resident of Pittsburgh and a youth advocate. He is a father, Pittsburgh Public School parent, and wrestling coach. He has also worked on programs to assist Pittsburgh youth in their post-secondary decision making.
Carlos is running for Pittsburgh Public Schools School Board because he cares deeply about PIttsburgh students, educators, and community. He wants to ensure that tax dollars work to lift all children and that Pittsburgh schools are guided by leaders who are elected by and accountable to the public. His commitment is to build a more equitable education system in Pittsburgh, one where every school—whether traditional or charter—is run with transparency, democratic oversight, and a strong commitment to the best interests of our kids.
Carlo’s positions on charters, vouchers, and testing are all in line with those of NPE Action.
Here’s what Carlos told us.
Charters: “I do not support their operation if they continue to receive public funding without the oversight of the public. Any public dollars used to educate our children must be governed by elected school board directors—not by private boards that make decisions behind closed doors. If students attend charter schools, then those institutions should be held to the same standards of transparency and public accountability as our traditional public schools.
Vouchers: “I cannot support diverting public funds away from our already struggling public schools to support charter or voucher programs. Our priority must be to invest in and improve our public education system so that every child has access to the quality education they deserve without compromising resources for those institutions that are meant to serve all families.
Testing: “Testing should be utilized as a baseline tool to assess student needs and identify areas for improvement. Testing can help us understand where interventions are needed, ensuring that every student receives the support necessary to succeed—without turning our education system into a high-stakes environment that punishes schools rather than helps them grow.”
NPE Action urges the Pittsburgh Public School District 1 community to get out the vote for Carlos Thomas in the primary election on May 20th.
