NPE Action is proud to endorse Allie Petonic for Pittsburgh Public Schools School Board, District 9. Allie is an experienced union organizer and has worked in coalition with Pittsburgh families toward implementing community schools in Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS).  She is a volunteer with the Education Rights Network and currently works at United Steelworkers, where she does strategic research for bargaining or organizing. Allie is also a graduate of public schools, and she has seen firsthand how strong public education can serve as the foundation for communities that care for one another.

Allie is running for school board because she believes Pittsburgh students, families, teachers, staff, and communities deserve more than top-down decisions that leave them out of the conversation. Allie told NPE Action that her commitment is to ensure that leadership is accountable and transparent, and that all voices are heard, respected, and actively involved in shaping the future of our schools. Allie believes strongly that we must come together to defend our public schools. She understands that strong public schools are the heart of thriving communities. She also knows that they drive safety, resources, and opportunities across neighborhoods.

Allie’s positions on charters and vouchers are all in line with those of NPE Action.

Here’s what Allie told us.

Charters: “Charter Schools use public tax dollars but don’t serve all children – they don’t enroll students with disabilities at the same rate as public schools and don’t serve English Language Learners. Charter Schools have a disproportionate number of students who receive low-cost special education services (speech, language, learning support) and a low number of students who receive high-cost special education services (one-on-one aides, emotional support, life-skills support).”

Vouchers: “I oppose vouchers in all forms. I support adequate, equitable, and sustainable funding for all students in public schools and oppose all efforts to dismantle public education through vouchers and other privatization schemes.”

NPE Action urges Pittsburgh Public School District 9 public education supporters to get out the vote for Allie Petonic in the primary election on May 20th.
