The Network for Public Education Action is proud to endorse Dr. Jen Mangrum for the North Carolina State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Jen would bring extraordinary leadership to a state which truly needs it.

NPE Action endorsed this candidate in her race against President Pro Tem of the Senate, Phil Berger – the single most powerful politician in NC. Berger has used his position as leader of the Senate to promote the privatization of North Carolina’s public schools. His policies have been harmful to the dedicated teachers of the state. She has proven that she is willing to fight against all odds for public schools.

Jen was a classroom teacher for 12 years and later a curriculum facilitator. She then earned her Ph.D. and became an Associate Professor in the School of Education at UNC-Greensboro, where she spent an additional 15 years in teacher education.

A founding member of NC Families for Testing Reform, she has called for an end to over-testing and the punitive implications for children, teachers, and schools.

Jen told NPE Action that her views on charters have evolved and that she recognizes that “charter schools have been hijacked by those who want to privatize education and they are using them as a weapon to starve schools of funding and segregate districts.” She said she would require companies and organizations that manage charter schools to be transparent and accountable and that she would support a moratorium on charter schools. She is strongly opposed to vouchers.

The election is November 3, 2020. Be sure to get to the polls and help a career educator save North Carolina public education from being dismantled and privatized.
