Andy Thorburn for the Orange County Board of Education District 3 Seat

The Network for Public Education Action is proud to endorse Andy Thorburn for the District 3 seat on the Orange County Board of Education.

Andy told NPE Action that he is running “to bring transparency, honesty, and local control back to the Orange County Board of Education. Ideological grandstanding has plagued our board long enough – we must stand up for our students, teachers, and staff.”

His opponent is a 20 year incumbent who took over $20,000 from the California Charter Schools Association during his 2016 campaign. Andy is seeking to replace a board member who has consistently over-ridden local school boards’ decisions in favor of charter school interests, many of which are now under-performing.

Andy has been a classroom teacher, and has picketed alongside his fellow teacher’s union members for smaller classes and higher wages. He supports a moratorium on any new charters, and wants to bring existing charters under closer supervision and to hold them to the same standards as public schools.

He told us that vouchers, tax credits, Education Empowerment Accounts, and other mechanisms are all ways to undermine the funding of our public education system. He believes strongly that public tax dollars should be invested into public schools.

Andy has fought for our public schools his entire life. We hope you will help him take that fight to the Orange County Board of Education.
