NPE Action endorses Dr. Karen Castor Dentel for the District 6 Seat on the Orange County School Board

We are proud to announce that Dr. Karen Castor Dentel has received the endorsement of the Network for Public Education Action for the District 6 seat on the Orange County School Board in Florida.

Karen is a teacher, mother, and a former Florida Legislator whose whole adult life has been devoted to education and supporting public schools. She has a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, a Masters in Literacy Studies, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction.

After serving in the legislature, she became the Director of Community School Development with the Children’s Home Society of Florida, expanding the community school model in 15 schools throughout the state by bringing together hospitals, universities, school boards, and nonprofits in partnership to support underserved schools and their communities.

As a teacher, Karen understands that class size matters. She told NPE Action that she will work with Florida’s next governor and legislature to restore funding to cap class sizes.

She believes that a no-stakes diagnostic standardized test may be used annually to inform parents and teachers of areas of concern or progress, but that those tests should not be tied to a teacher’s evaluation, a child’s retention or a school-based grade or funding.

Karen fully supports a moratorium on charter schools, and transparency regarding how charter companies spend taxpayer money.

The primary election is on August 28th – please do what you can to spread the word about Karen’s candidacy.
