NPE Action endorses Mary Sinclair for Shawnee Mission Board of Education.

NPE Action is proud to endorse parent, educator, and advocate, Mary Sinclair, for the East area seat for the Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education.

Mary and her eldest son are Shawnee Mission graduates, and her daughter is presently a student in the district. Mary has a BS in Psychology, a Master’s in Education, and a Doctorate in Special Education. She has spent 30 years conducting and teaching educational research – she teaches graduate courses at the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Mary told us that she has “advocated for Kansas public schools for the past 15 years and for my belief that quality public education is the cornerstone of a thriving community and healthy democracy.”

She was a PTA legislative chair in her local school, and was later nominated to Kansas PTA leadership. Mary has also served as a mentor since 2011 with the SMSD MVP volunteer program.

Mary noted that districts are expected to see a partial restoration of state aid, with an estimated increase of at least $14.2 million to Shawnee Mission toward the roughly $30 million in cuts since 2009. As a result of those cuts, Shawnee Mission schools lost counselors, aids, librarians, social workers, and paraprofessionals.

She said that she will “encourage an inclusive and evidence-based decision-making process to prioritize the use of increased K-12 funding from the 2017 state legislature.”

We hope that you will support Mary Sinclair’s candidacy for East area on the Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education by voting for her on November 7th.
