Laura Guy for Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education

Published by

Laura Guy has earned the endorsement of NPE Action for the West area seat on the Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education.

Laura is a strong supporter of public education and has the skills and experience to be an effective member of the Board. She has a Bachelor’s in Education, and spent several years in the classroom before founding the Living Water Christian Church in 2004, and getting a Master’s of Divinity in 2005. Today, Laura remains the solo pastor at her church.

She told us that she is running because “the School Board needs new people to restore transparency and rebuild trust in the district.”

As a child, Laura was a part of a voluntary busing program that sought to integrate the Des Moines Public Schools. She rode a bus from her suburban neighborhood to an urban school every day for five years.

Reflecting on this experience she said that she “believed that my generation would see the end of segregated schools. I am alarmed at how schools are becoming re-segregated and I want to be vigilant against this in my district.”

Laura was clear that she is against public tax dollars going to private or parochial schools, and that she believes charter schools weaken the public schools. Laura is also concerned that charters are not required to accept all students, and stated unequivocally that she will work to support public schools as the best course of action for all children.

Please support Laura Guy for the West area seat on the Shawnee Mission Board of Education on November 7th.
