Natalie Beyer – Durham Board of Education, District 4

In the District 4 race for the Durham Board of Education the Network for Public Education Action has endorsed Natalie Beyer.

Natalie has served on the Durham Board of Education since 2010. She has over 17 years of experience as a parent volunteer, community advocate and school board member. She is a founding board member of Parents Across America, and an alumni board member of Public Schools First NC where she worked with advocates across the state for “more instructional time focused on critical thinking and less time wasted on high-stakes bubble testing.”

She has been a vocal critic of privatization efforts such as private school vouchers and unfettered charter school proliferation. Natalie is also opposed to virtual charter schools, which she called “a privatization tool for profiteers” that “have abysmal achievement results.”

She said that there is “urgent work to do to correct decades of systemic inequities” which is why as a board member she focuses every decision she makes on excellence and equity for all. She is a champion of alternatives to suspension and restorative practices.

Natalie supports professional educators from traditional teacher preparation programs and she led efforts to end her district’s contract with Teach for America. She is also proud that her board led a community effort to expand pre-K by maximizing the number of pre-K spots in the district.

We hope that you will do everything you can to ensure Natalie maintains her seat on the Durham Board of Education so that she can continue to advocate for Durham’s public schools and the children they serve. Her primary election is on May 8th, but early voting has already begun.
