NPE Action endorses Ellen Lipton for Congress

NPE Action is proud to endorse Ellen Lipton, a candidate for Congress from the State of Michigan. Ellen has a background rooted in education advocacy and public service. She was the State Representative for Michigan District 27 for six years, and her advocacy work led to the end to the Education Achievement Authority, an entity created to take over local schools.

Ellen fully understands the threat Betsy DeVos poses to public education, and says she is running for Congress “to fight back against the Trump/DeVos agenda which dismantles our public schools.” She is clear that DeVos’s school choice policies have been a complete failure in Michigan, pointing to the proliferation of for-profit charters and flat funding for public schools despite rising costs.

Ellen’s education policy positions are fully in line with those of NPE Action. She supports the elimination of all high-stakes testing and a moratorium on charter schools, and opposes any form of vouchers, Education Savings Accounts or tax credit scholarships.  She also told us that she supports legislation and policy changes to reduce class sizes.

There is no doubt that Ellen Lipton’s combination of fearless activism and legislative know-how is needed in Washington, DC to lead the battle against Betsy DeVos’s privatization agenda.
