My name is xxxx and I am calling to let the Senator know that I would like him/her to oppose the appointment of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education.

DeVos and her family heavily lobbied the Michigan legislature to shield the charter industry from greater oversight. She pushes for-profit charter schools and online schools, which consistently fail the students that they are supposed to serve. During her hearing she showed herself to be unprepared for the job.

I want my tax dollars to stay in my community to support my public schools.  Betsy DeVos is bad for American education. She is unqualified to serve as Secretary of Education.

I am hearing that the number for Mark Kirk is incorrect and that he lost his seat so he won’t be on the committee. Do you know who his replacement would be and what their phone numbers are? Thanks!

    Dear Chr. Alexander:

Please oppose confirmation of Betsy DeVos as U.S. Secretary of Education. She has never managed a large bureaucracy or business; has no background in how the federal government should relate to state and local governents; has little or no familarity with the hundreds of federal laws and rules governing schools; and has a singular focus and preference for destruction of public education to be replaced by private education, including for-profit schools which put profit before educational services.

It has taken years to re-authorize ESEA and rein in the federal Department of Education which felt it could go beyond the law to spend federal dollars in ways not intended by the Congress. We do not need another Education Secretary who has no familiarity with but long-expressed desires to implement action not included in federal law.

My daughter goes to a large urban school system. While there are a significant number of poor students who do not do well in school, our school provides an excellent education for those committed to their own educational achievement. Our school also provides extra resources to those needing extra help such as bi-lingual services and other special needs. My daughter suffered from mononucleosis and had to be out of school for several weeks. The school sent a teacher to our home to help her keep up with her studies during her extended illness. But if charter school apprpriations and private school vouchers drain our school of precious funds, these kinds of services will no longer be affordable.

Betsy DeVos has no experience with public schools or the many services they provide. She opposed any oversight AT ALL for charter schools in Michigan, despite the very dismal performance of Michigan charters and the money these schools were draining from the public schools which enrolled the students the charter schools would not enroll.

There are many qualified, experienced school administrators in this country who have run large school systems and who know first hand the problems which need to be address and how to fix them. I hope you will tell the President that we need someone of that calibre and experience to fill this position.

Please do not allow Ms Betsy DeVos become Secretary of Education. I believe that she cannot be truly open and supportive to public education. She has too much history with for profit charter schools. Money that is directed to the charter schools need to public schools. The money is from taxes that should not be to be given to for profit charter schools. Please understand this is a huge mistake. Betty Yendrek

  5. Cheryl napiorski

This woman is no more fit to be Secretary of Education than Trump is to be president. She has no experience and her desire to shield charter schools will lead to their dismantling of them public school system.
